The Jesse Stone 9 movie collection is based on a long collection of crime novels written by Robert B. Parker.
The late American author created and debuted the police chief’s character in the beloved crime novel Night Passage.
The novel mystery series ends with Split Image, which Parker completed before his death in 2010.
In the movie series, Tom Selleck stars as Jesse Stone, a former minor league baseball player whose career was cut short by a shoulder injury.
He later worked his way up to LAPD homicide detective, where he was asked to resign over a drinking problem that began after his divorce.
He then interviews and becomes the police chief of the small town of Paradise, which has big crime problems.
The Jesse Stone movie series premiered with Stone Cold, a made-for-TV movie that aired on CBS in 2005.
CBS continued the films with Night Passage and Death in Paradise as well as most of the rest of the series until 2012.
In 2015, Hallmark picked up the series and added the final installment, Lost in Paradise.
The order of the Jesse Stone movies depends on how you prefer to watch the series. Some like the back and forth of the story, and some like to watch it by timeline.

Now you might think that, with only 9 movies, the Jesse Stone story should easily follow in order of release. Not so fast. There is a small hitch in the storyline.
Jesse Stone Movies in Order to Watch
There is one small detail in that one of the movies is actually a prequel. Personally, my simple mind prefers movies that are easy to watch in chronological order without prequels at the end.
But in this series, Jesse Stone: Night Passage is actually a prequel to Stone Cold and the first of the Jesse Stone movies in order to watch.
Here are the Jesse Stone movies in order to watch them and the description of each:
In the prequel to the first Stone Movie, Night Passage, Tom Selleck returns in the role of the small-town police chief, having been booted from the LAPD for drunkenness.
Stone heads to Paradise, Massachusetts, where he is appointed police chief by a corrupt local banker, Hastings Hathaway, who is president of the Board of Selectmen.
Hathaway chooses Stone because he thinks he will be easy to control. Stone’s first assignment is to investigate the murder of his predecessor, Lou Carson, played by Mike Starr, which may have mob ties.
In Stone Cold, ugly crimes in a small town require rugged cops. Jess Stone (Tom Selleck) is a thick-skinned police chief with a good heart, but he is not the kind of man to wear his emotions on his sleeve.
Generally, for Stone, when the going gets tough, the whiskey starts to flow. Not this time.
When a series of unexplained murders begin in Paradise, Stone suspects a pair of peculiar artists with a fascination with violence. But they are not the only ones under suspicion.
Stone becomes a bit puzzled over the sexual assault of a minor and wonders if there is a link between the assault and the murders.
The next Jesse Stone movie to watch is Death in Paradise. Jesse Stone attempts to solve the murder of a teenage girl and the fatal result of domestic violence in the third cinematic mystery appearance of Robert B. Parker’s self-titled detective.
As if this weren’t enough for a small town department, Stone learns that the body of a former straight-A student has been found floating in a local lake, and the parents hadn’t even reported her missing.
With little to go on, Stone branches into the city to further his investigation, where he has a brush with the Boston Mob.
At every turn, Stone feels he is moving further and further from the truth.
Stone’s determination quickly turns to obsession once he feels he is finally on track to solve the case.
In Sea Change, as Police Chief Jesse Stone’s relationship with his ex-wife deteriorates further, he fears a relapse into alcoholism.
Seeking counsel, he is advised to begin working on cold cases to stay busy. He begins working on the unsolved murder of a local bank teller, shot during a robbery.
In the meantime, an alleged rape draws Stone into conflict with the town council, hoping to preserve Paradise’s prestige as an ideal seaside resort.
In Thin Ice, Selleck returns to the role of the troubled but uncompromising police chief of Paradise. The story picks up with a pair of investigations and Stone’s relationship with the town council becoming perilous.
Stone is wounded during a murderous attempt on the life of Captain Healy of the Massachusetts State Police and puts his sights on the would-be killer against the advice of Internal Affairs, the Paradise Town Council, and Healy himself.
All the while, the chief’s alcohol problems and the breakup of his marriage are chronicled.
Not lessening Stone’s determination to plow the course of his own moral ethics, he takes on his superior’s shady ethics, a would-be killer and possible kidnapper.
The next of the Jesse Stone movies in order is No Remorse.
This continues the saga of the anguished and relentless former police chief in the small town of Paradise.
Self-imposed seclusion follows his suspension from the Paradise Police Department, while a series of mysterious murders that appear to be related occur in nearby Boston.
The killings draw Stone back into the fold. Before you know it, Stone is following a crooked path that leads to the city’s most notorious crime boss, Gino Fish.
The seventh entry into the investigative mystery series is Innocents Lost and, although not based on Parker’s novel series, may well be the most gripping in the movie collection.
After his involuntary retirement, Stone is faced with a case that hits close to home. Cindy Van Aldan was like a daughter to Jesse Stone. Now she is dead.
All signs point to a suicidal overdose. But, Stone knows his dear friend better than that.
Still, without a full-time job, Stone embarks on the investigation and picks up a consulting gig with the State Police on a robbery and murder suspect.
The arrogant new chief expects Stone to give up his carry concealed permit but is informed that federal law allows former law enforcement to maintain it.
Chief Stone is back on the job in Benefit of the Doubt after his previous replacement is killed by a suspicious vehicle explosion. Also killed in the explosion was an officer recently fired by Jesse.
Due to releasing the previous chief’s staff, Chief Stone is forced to rely on his own intuition to peel back the layers of misleading information to attempt to unravel the truth of the mysterious murders.
The last Jesse Stone movie in order to watch is Lost In Paradise. Things in the town of Paradise seem to be running smoothly, so, Chief Stone takes advantage of some well-deserved vacation time in Boston.
While there, the Assistant State Homicide Commander, aware of his LAPD Homicide experience, requests his consultation on a set of cold case murders.
His law enforcement instincts lead him to a case already closed. There is something about it he can’t let go of and it leads him into a dangerous investigative endeavor.
Local Boston police suspect “The Boston Ripper,” who is already behind bars, but, Stone takes it in another direction, leading it closer to home with surprises, unlikely suspects, and grave danger around every corner.
